This Tap Dance class is an open-level technique class which will give all students the opportunity relative to their individual abilities to learn, understand, practice, and develop technical skills in basic tap dance styles, traditional movement terms, neuromuscular coordination, and kinesthetic sense. In this class we will focus on a four part method of developing essential tap dancing techniques and finally performing rhythm-based tap dance choreography. A major focus will be elements of the world famous “Shim Sham Shimmy” created in 1929 by Leonard Reed. |

Through the use of various technique development exercises, students will actively participate in the variable combination of movements into sequences focusing on awareness of their kinesphere, and the effort, shape, time, and flow of movement within and around it. Students will develop a practical and applied understanding of dance performance structure, style, and execution. Students will develop the basic dance and motor skills of placement, balance, coordination, and memory retention. Students will develop a basic understanding of Tap Dance as a historical dance form and gain appreciation of Tap Dance as an art form. Students will become familiar and comfortable with the structure and expectations of a professional dance class. They will develop the skills and practical knowledge necessary to continue study on a regular basis anywhere.
